Walk the Path

Posted on December 13, 2013in First to Help Others

(Indiana, USA) – “There is a difference between knowing the path, and walking the path.”
– Morpheus, The Matrix

Sometimes, I roll The Company Cube and have the best intentions of putting it into practice, but don’t make it. That’s what happened today. The side came up “First To Help Others!” I even put it right in front of my computer monitor. And there it sat…all day! As I was leaving the office tonight, I spotted it as I was putting on my coat. I had gotten caught up with several of my own concerns and failed to think about it. Feeling disappointed as I walked out the door, I was reminded of a simple response to my failure: start again. So, tomorrow I’ll leave that same phrase up and try again. Got to walk the path!

Concrete Action Incognito

Posted on December 4, 2013in Support with Actions, Not Just Words

(Indiana, USA) – Stopped what I was doing today to help pick up someone else’s mess at work that was left from the day before. Later they saw the cleaned-up table and I heard them tell someone else it is great someone took the time to help straighten up the office.

Waiting with Patience

Posted on November 25, 2013in Share Expertise, Time, Yourself

(J.R. – Indiana, USA) – Last week I implemented a new process for one of my employees. I explained in great detail what needed to be done the following week. When it came time to enter the data, he hadn’t finished his part. I had to sit and wait while he did it. He asked me some more questions and at the end said, “That was easy!.” While I was waiting I remembered The Company Cube that said “Share Time & Expertise.” Instead of making an “I told you so” retort, I let him know I was glad that the process was working better. And I was!

Brewing Cooperation

Posted on November 7, 2013in Competitors Can Be Friends Too

(J.M. – Indiana, USA) – I’ve been working on a project with someone who always has to have it their way. As a result, I had purposefully stopped giving my opinion, even though I knew my experience would provide valuable input. I must admit, I kind of wanted to see this person fail just to show him his ideas were not always right. This morning, I rolled The Company Cube and it said ‘Competitors Can Be Friends too!’ Great, now I had to change my attitude toward this person! Later today, I was sent a Powerpoint presentation for an upcoming meeting in which he would be speaking. Instead of giving ‘no comment’, I added several suggestions and changes to improve his talk. After seeing my recommendations, he came back and thanked me for taking the time to review it. It seems like a new spirit of cooperation is brewing! Sometimes, it takes just a little more effort to change the inertia in a relationship!
