Share Expertise, Time, Yourself

The Problem Printer

Posted on April 20, 2013in Share Expertise, Time, Yourself

(D.C. – USA) Lately, I have been given additional job responsibilities at work. I tend to get behind with paper work so I try catching up by working on it in between my other responsibilities. One morning I had the perfect chance to do it and I immediately plunged into it.

Prior to that day my co-worker mentioned to me that she was not able to print the test results the way the doctor prefers. I told her I would help when I had the chance.

I was engrossed with my work when she reminded me of her printing problem. I had completely forgot about it. I was so immersed that I didn’t want to be disturbed. I got irritated when she said “Are you going to help?” I dragged myself to see what I could do to help her. I told her I don’t remember printing the kind of pattern she wants. So I told her bluntly that she could figure it out herself. I didn’t want to be bothered any more so I could finish my own work. As I continued to catch up with my work something inside of me told me “she is my neighbor who needs help at that moment.”

I didn’t know how to make the pattern the way our boss wanted it, but I found myself in front of the problem machine. I tried and tried and after a while the correct pattern printed out. My co-worker was pleased and reciprocated my action by letting the doctor know to whom the credit is due.

I was not able to catch up with my work that day, however I was able to catch up again with what I was lacking – to be the first to accept God in my neighbor.

Working Late

Posted on April 19, 2013in Share Expertise, Time, Yourself

(E.J. – USA) I was working late one night when I realized I had a voicemail. Earlier in the day a friend with whom I am working on a project had left a message to call her. She lives three time zones away.

It was midnight and I was ready to call it a day. But it occurred to me that it was only 9:00 pm where she lived. I realized immediately that this was an opportunity to share my time, no matter how tired I felt I should return her call. When she answered, the tone in her voice confirmed for me that I’d made the right choice. Her joy paid me back a hundred times over for the small amount of fatigue I was feeling.

We were able to work for another hour on the details of the project, and we made great progress. But for me, even more important than the work on our project is the confirmation that when I pay attention that “little voice,” I discover ways of performing little acts that have a truly lasting effect for me and for my neighbor.
